TAAA COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES/EVENTS...

BLACK HISTORY MONTH ESSAY CONTEST
A contest held each year to encourage teachers in the TUSD to promote the education of black history to elementary and middle school students. Essay winners are awarded U.S. savings bonds as prizes. The contest allows each student to obtain perspective about African American history and the people who contributed to the historical African American journey.

DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.  BREAKFAST
Sponsored by TAAA, the breakfast allows Tracy high schools’ Black Student Unions to present and host a celebratory breakfast to acknowledge and recognize achievements of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., while motivating others to participate in building racial harmony and cultural education in our community.

WAYNE NELSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
For many years, the African-American community has recognized a need for improved educational opportunities for African American youth. TAAA grants academic scholarships annually in order to enrich educational opportunities for eligible college-bound African American students in Tracy, CA. Scholarships are presented during the annual Juneteenth Festival, to high school seniors entering accredited colleges and universities.

JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL
While it symbolizes the end of slavery, Juneteenth has come to symbolize for many African-Americans what the 4th of July means for all American freedom. It serves as a historical milestone reminding Americans of the triumph of the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery. It honors those African American ancestors who survived the inhumane institution of bondage, and demonstrates pride in the marvelous legacy of resistance and perseverance they left us. The annual Juneteenth Festival is our signature event that generates significant funds for the TAAA scholarship program.

KWANZAA CELEBRATION
A non-religious African American cultural celebration provides the community the opportunity to join in celebrating African American heritage and many important principles; hosted annually at the home of Melyssa Barrett.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE
Each year, prior to the start of the school year, TAAA solicits donations of school supplies and backpacks, and distributes them to children in at-risk communities.
